Shebara
Shebara is the one readers send me photos of. The villas are mirrored steel spheres on stilts off Sheybarah Island, and they reflect the water so completely that from a distance the resort nearly disappears.
It is the developer’s own brand rather than a global chain, and that shows up in small ways. Service is warm and slightly less drilled than a Ritz-Carlton, and I do not mean that as an insult.
The catch is the shape. A round villa photographs beautifully and eats usable wall space in real life, so look at the floor plan if you travel heavy or need a work surface.

The St. Regis Red Sea Resort
This one sits on Ummahat Island 1, and its overwater rooms are called Coral Villas. They spiral, which sounds like a gimmick until you stand on the deck and realize the curve is what keeps you out of your neighbor’s sightline.
The property splits its roughly ninety villas between beachfront Dune Villas and the overwater Coral Villas. Confirm which category your rate covers, because the booking flow does not always make that obvious.

Nujuma, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve
Reserve is Ritz-Carlton’s smallest and most heavily staffed format, and Nujuma uses it properly. You get a personal host instead of a front desk, and the villa count stays low enough that staff will know your name by the second morning.
The water villas here are shell-shaped and quiet. If your idea of a good trip is nobody speaking to you until you speak first, this is your property.

What this coast gives you that the Maldives does not
Reef. Not the thin, bleached, thirty-fish house reef you get at plenty of Indian Ocean resorts, but dense hard coral with structure and constant traffic.
I have slipped off a jetty ladder here and seen more in twenty minutes than I have on some paid boat excursions elsewhere. That is the honest reason to make this trip.
You also get space. These islands are big enough that the resorts are not stacked on each other, and the horizon is not freckled with somebody else’s jetty lights at night.
The third thing is novelty, which is worth less than people think and is not worth nothing. Almost nobody you know has done this trip yet.
The parts nobody puts in the brochure
Saudi Arabia does not serve alcohol. Not at the resort, not on the transfer, not discreetly at dinner if you ask the right person.
For some travelers that is a non-issue and for others it quietly deflates the whole honeymoon. Be honest with your partner about it now, because a very good mocktail program will not fix a real disappointment.
Summer heat here changes how you use a villa rather than just making you warm. You swim early, retreat for the middle of the day, and reappear at dusk.
Dining is still maturing. What I have eaten was good, and the number of places to eat it is smaller than the nightly rate suggests.
Above all, this is a young destination. Boat schedules, restaurant hours, spa openings, and which villas are in service can all shift, so confirm anything load-bearing directly with the property.
Getting there without wrecking your first day
Everything routes through Red Sea International Airport, which you reach on a domestic connection. Build a real buffer, because there is no hourly backup flight if you miss it.
From the airport the St. Regis quotes roughly twenty-five minutes by seaplane, or a short drive followed by about an hour on a boat. Ask which one your rate includes, because the difference between those two is real money and about two hours of your life.
I would fly in a day early and sleep on the mainland rather than arrive frazzled at dark. A water villa you reach at midnight is an expensive bed.

How I would choose, in four rules
- You want the photograph: Shebara. Nothing else built over water looks like it.
- You are bringing children or a second couple: the St. Regis, for the multi-bedroom Coral Villas with their own pools.
- You want to be left alone and served perfectly: Nujuma.
- Somebody in your party needs a glass of wine to feel on vacation: none of them. Book the Indian Ocean instead.

- Is my rate for an overwater villa or a beach villa? Get the exact category name in writing.
- Is the transfer seaplane or road plus boat, and is it included or billed per person?
- What is the seaplane cutoff time, and what happens if my connection lands after it?
- Which side of the island is snorkeling from the jetty best on this month?
- What is the service charge and tax load on top of the room rate?
- Are there any minimum-age rules for this villa category?
Who should skip the Red Sea entirely
Skip it if this is your first long-haul beach trip. The logistics reward travelers who have already done a seaplane transfer and know how to pack for a weight limit.
Skip it in high summer if you are heat-sensitive. I would rather send you elsewhere than watch you spend four expensive days indoors.

Fast answers about the Saudi Red Sea
Can women travel here independently?
Yes, women travel on the standard tourist visa without a male relative, and inside these resorts you dress as you would at any beach property. Off the island, in towns like Umluj, modest clothing is the norm and worth packing a couple of pieces for.
Is alcohol really unavailable at the resorts?
Yes, alcohol is not served anywhere in the country, and these resorts are no exception. The non-alcoholic bar programs are taken seriously and some drinks are genuinely good, but no one will produce a wine list for you.
When is the best time to go?
The cooler stretch from late fall through early spring is the comfortable window, when you can sit on your deck at midday without regretting it. Summer is hot enough to reorganize your entire schedule around shade and air conditioning.
How good is the snorkeling straight off the villa?
Better than most water villas I have swum from, with hard coral close in and steady fish traffic rather than a sandy dead zone. Conditions still depend on your villa’s position and that week’s wind, so ask the dive center which side is working before you request a number.
Are these resorts good for kids?
The St. Regis is the easiest fit, since its Coral Villas run up to four bedrooms with a private pool attached. Confirm minimum-age and occupancy rules with the other two directly, because Reserve-style properties often lean adult and policies change without announcement.
How does the price compare to the Maldives?

My final call
I would book Shebara for four or five nights on a shoulder-season date. Those villas are the most interesting thing anyone has built over water in a decade, and the reef underneath them justifies the rate in a way that a lot of overwater resorts cannot manage.
With children along I would switch to the St. Regis without a second’s hesitation.
