Four of the seven sit in one country, and that is not an accident. The Maldives is the only market where a global chain can run a genuine luxury water villa resort at scale and fill it year round.

Within that cluster the four properties are not variations on a theme. They target four different budgets and four different trips.

Conrad Maldives Rangali Island

The original. Two islands joined by a long bridge, a house reef with real structure, and the undersea suite that put this resort in every article ever written about the Maldives.

The location in South Ari Atoll is the underrated part. This is whale shark water, and the excursions out of here are genuinely good rather than a box to tick.

Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi

This is the flagship and it behaves like one. Everything is bigger, including the villas, the pools, and the bill.

What sets it apart is the top of the range, where a separate staffed private island sits away from the main resort. That is a different product from a water villa, and it is priced accordingly.

Hilton Maldives Amingiri

The newest of the group and, for a lot of travelers, the correct one. It is close enough to Male for a speedboat transfer, which removes the single biggest friction point of a Maldives trip.

That matters because seaplanes only fly in daylight. A late arrival into Male means an overnight in a city hotel before you ever see your villa, and a speedboat resort just takes you straight there.

SAii Lagoon Maldives, Curio Collection

The odd one out, and I mean that as a compliment. It sits on a developed multi island complex with a marina, shops, and restaurants you can walk to.

That is heresy to the one island one resort crowd and a relief to everyone who has gone quietly stir crazy on day five. Confirm the current overwater inventory when you book, because this is a resort where room categories have shifted.

French Polynesia, where Hilton has two very different bungalows

Bora Bora and Moorea are ninety minutes apart by boat and plane, and they are not interchangeable. Choosing between them is really choosing how much you want to leave the resort.

Conrad Bora Bora Nui sits on the quieter southwest side of the island, which means sunsets rather than the postcard Mount Otemanu view. That trade catches people out, so decide which one you came for.

Moorea is the opposite proposition. The island has roads, pineapple fields, hiking, and food that is not resort food, and the bungalows sit on a lagoon rather than a bucket list.

The Hilton overwater villa nobody counts

There is a DoubleTree by Hilton on a small island off Noumea in New Caledonia with actual overwater bungalows. It is the cheapest way into a Hilton water villa by a wide margin.

It is also the one that needs the most homework. New Caledonia has been through a rough patch for visitors, so check current operating status and travel conditions before you build a trip around it.

Do not expect Maldives polish. Expect a modest bungalow, a short ferry, and a very good story.

How Hilton Honors points actually work on a water villa

I am going to describe mechanics rather than numbers, because Hilton prices awards dynamically and any figure I quote will be wrong within a month. The mechanics, though, are stable and worth understanding.

• There is no award chart. The points price tracks the cash rate, so the same villa can cost wildly different amounts in March and September.
• Water villas are usually premium room awards, not standard. That is the single most important line here.
• The fifth night free applies to standard room awards. Premium room awards generally do not get it, which is why the trick everyone repeats often fails at exactly these resorts.
• Points and Money lets you slide the mix. On expensive resorts this is often better value than an all points booking.
• Availability is not guaranteed. Standard rooms have to be made available for awards, premium categories do not.

The trap is assuming points cover the trip. They cover the room and nothing else.

The seaplane or speedboat transfer is cash. So is the service charge, the tourism tax, the green tax, and any mandatory meal plan, and in the Maldives those add up to a serious number on top of a free room.

So price the whole trip in cash first, then decide whether the points are saving you anything real. A free room on a very expensive island is still a very expensive week.

Where Hilton has nothing, and who should skip the brand

Hilton has no overwater villas in the Caribbean, none in Mexico, and none in Fiji. If that is your region, this is the wrong brand and no amount of loyalty will fix it.

Skip Hilton if you are chasing an all inclusive water villa. The brand’s overwater properties run on meal plans you add, not on a wristband, and the math rarely favors it.

Skip it too if you have a modest Honors balance and no status. Premium room awards at these resorts are expensive in points, and you will get more out of the same balance almost anywhere else in the portfolio.

On a big occasion, Waldorf Astoria Ithaafushi and nothing else in the portfolio comes close. On points, I would check Conrad Bora Bora Nui and Amingiri first, because those are where premium awards occasionally make sense.

And if you want the island rather than the villa, Moorea. I have never met anyone who regretted that choice.
